Top Ten All-Time Faves: Old Romantic Flicks
Because I have nothing better to do than mop around for my lost phone. :)
Pero evidently, possible na mag-meet ang romance and genius somewhere in the middle, and a perfect example of this is my #1 fave, Casablanca. Although "corny" siya for some people (ironically, the people who say it's corny are the same ones who haven't even watched it yet), you'd have to see beyond the black and white film for you to judge it. It's not enough that you just SEE it, you have to UNDERSTAND it. Then maybe you'd find appreciation para sa mga movies na ganito.
Wala lang. Depressed lang kasi ako. Haha.
- Casablanca (1942) - Many people ask me why this movie is one of my all-time faves. It doesn't even matter if it's romantic or not; it's just such a downright wonderful movie. Don't ask me why, coz words will never justify its greatness. I had to watch it again right after kasi napa-HUWAT ako sa ending (completely unexpected). Great story, great characters. Dito ako naging fan ni Ingrid Bergman (aminado). One of the most romantic lines ever said in all the movies I've seen: "Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life." This is the best. Movie. Ever. As in. I swear.
- Gone with the Wind (1939) - Who doesn't know Scarlette O'Hara? If I thought that Sound of Music is long, hell, ito longer talaga. Pero the story more than makes up for its almost boring length. Just don't let the latter get to you, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
- Star Wars (1977) - Romantic naman ito, ha? Diba? Diba? :D
- The Sound of Music (1965) - In a word, ASTIG! And what makes it a good movie is not just the roster of songs sang in it. Iba talaga siya. Favorite scene ko rito ay nung kumanta yung Von Trapp children ng "So Long, Farewell" na may matching sipaan pa. Kyut!
NYAHAHA!
Para siyang A Walk to Remember, only helluva lot better and greater (well, actually, ang similarity lang nila ay may sakit si babae). Marami ring memorable lines dito, pero ang pinakapamilyar sa lahat ay, "Love means never having to say you're sorry." At isa pa, yung song. Shucks. Dabest. The movie is frigging cheasy, but for me, it still works (or talagang sobrang hopeless romantic lang ako).
- Somewhere in Time (1980) - Ang corny nitong movie na ito. Ang weird. No, SOBRANG weird. Ang kulit. Pero goodness, it's still...okay. Biruin mo, si Superman (Christopher Reeve), lovesick?! It's...unexplainable eh. You have to watch it para malaman mo ibig kong sabihin. Medyo dragging siya ng konti, pero other than that, it's still something to be liked.
- A Room with a View (1985) - It's extremely rare that a movie adaptation be so good, and this is one of the products of those rare moments. The plot summary written on websites will never bring justice to its true beauty. Touching, funny, and well-done. Superb ang cast, pati ang costumes. Galing!
- When Harry Met Sally (1989) - The newest and lightest of the bunch. A brilliant romantic comedy. Mababaw lang yung storya (as others put it, it's basically summarized in the question: can two people be friends without having sex?), pero it's amazingly fulfilling and sobrang funny talaga. If you're not into old movies much (translate: those released before 1990), this is the perfect one in my list for you to see.
